Hole-by-Hole Descriptions
1. Seemingly Harmless
The opening hole is a Par 4 of only 350 yards. Out of bounds runs along the left and right treelines and a deep brook crosses the fairway at the 100-yard marker. This can easily become a tough start. The green is tight and surrounded by bunkers, mounds, and trees.
2. Limbs of Eck
An uphill Par 3 with a tabletop green and an old oak tree looming over the right side. This hole will test your short game with two huge bunkers guarding the left and right of the green’s approach.
3. The Chute
From the tee you face a tight chute and a quick dogleg right. Precision is key here, as this hole is protected by bunkers and a creek that runs just short of the green. The ideal tee shot is past the corner and out on the left side of the fairway.
4. Left Knee
Changes in elevation make this 406-yard Par 4 one of the hardest on the course. A bunker guards the right side of the optimum landing area, and the green is protected by tall trees and bunkers—plus a creek just short of the approach.
5. The Grinder
Trouble abounds off the tee, with a pond on the left and trees down the right squeezing a narrow fairway. Favor the left side and watch the bunker just short of the green on your second shot.
6. Straight Serenity
Keep your opening shot straight and the lake is only scenery down the left side. At under 300 yards, all possibilities are in play. Deep bunkers are the main defense on this short hole; good course management can yield generous rewards.
7. Breathing Room
This is the kindest Par 3 on the course. Bunkers on the left and tall trees on the right frame a multi-level green with plenty of undulation. One extra hazard: getting distracted by the gorgeous view.
8. Hawks Revenge
This short Par 5 has multiple changes in elevation, dropping about 70 yards and rising back up 100 yards to a plateau. The top of the hill marks the 150-yard point, leading to another bunker-laden green. Look high above for the red-tailed hawk watching over you.
9. Secured Beachhead
An uphill Par 3 with a tough run of bunkers plastered up the left side that naturally tempts players to bail out right. The question is: is long a good miss here?
10. Picturesque Danger
A beautiful starting hole for the back nine, but don’t be fooled by the scenery. Keep your drive on the left side of the fairway to set up a clear view of the uphill green. The second shot is critical, with a pair of pot bunkers nestled in front.
11. Blind
This dogleg Par 4 is a favorite. The green is completely blind from the tee, just a solid shot into the corner of the fairway away. Long is trouble, with out of bounds along the treeline. A good drive sets up a mid-iron or shorter into a small, tree-lined green.
12. Great Depression
A downhill hole that looks carved straight out of the forest. Out of bounds lurks on both sides of the tree-lined fairway, so down the middle is the only way to go. As you reach the basin you’re 150 yards from a tiny green with no bunkers, but every shot demands respect.
13. Blocks’ Arena
A small round green, elevated and uphill the whole way. This 150-yard hole brings potential chaos, with out of bounds left in the trees and a small trap on the front-left corner. Flying the green is not recommended.
14. Redemption
A straightforward Par 4. Tall trees on the right and out of bounds in the top-left woods create plenty to think about, but a drive in the middle of the wide fairway leaves a short iron approach. Avoid the front bunkers and your next birdie chance awaits.
15. Uphill and Vale
The tree line on the left frames the longest Par 5 on the course. Keep your opening shot near the center, with out of bounds left and “jail” to the right. A long, demanding second shot still lies ahead down this wide, serene fairway. Go for the green and get close—this is one of the largest greens on the course.
16. Turtle Shells
This hole offers a secondary set of championship tees behind the lake, creating an over-water opening drive on this Par 5. Down the left side, turtle-shell hills lead you to an elevated green. Hazards are everywhere, with out of bounds along the left treeline and plenty of water to avoid.
17. Pine Bough
Coming down the stretch, this Par 3 is tough. A small green is guarded by bunkers left and right and a steep hill falling from the left down to the right side. A well-placed shot is key: aim for the center of the green or try sliding it off the left hill.
18. The Great Equalizer
The finale at HVR is a long uphill Par 4 with trouble along both sides of the fairway and a surprise set of greenside bunkers. Drive it to the top of the hill and you’ll leave yourself about 150 yards to the pin, with options to run it on or fly it home.
